Fairfield's Kids Explain the Fourth of July

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Happy Independence Day, Fairfield! In honor of Monday’s celebrations, TheDailyFairfield’s film crew headed out around town to see whether the kids know the reason behind the day’s parties. While 5-year-olds James Clemensen, Emma Fullam and Grace Fullam had some trouble, 9-year-old Fabio was dead on — calling the day “America’s Birthday.”

All four kids, however, agreed on the best parts of the holiday: fireworks and barbecues. If you don’t have plans for either, Fairfield has two events Monday that will have you covered.

If you’re looking for a nice barbecue, Fairfield’s Eunice Dennie Burr chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution is hosting one. Its annual Independence Day reception takes place from 10 a.m. to noon Monday. The ladies will have refreshments and activities on the Old Academy lawn, next to Old Town Hall at Beach Road and Old Post Road.

As for fireworks, the Parks and Recreation department’s display is still on for Monday night. The bombs bursting in air will launch from Long Island Sound just after dark, and the best viewing places will be along Jennings and Penfield beaches. In case of bad weather, call 203-256-3144 to make sure the event is still on.
