Fairfield Writers Show New Side to Santa

Judah Domke has seen countless characters get “reboots” over the last few years. Batman, James Bond, Star Trek’s Captain Kirk -- most film series decided to go back to their characters’ roots. So, when the Southport resident decided to write a children’s book with his father, Todd, he decided to look into the origins of another classic character: Santa Claus.

Judah and Todd teamed up to write “Nicholas Claus: the Story of Young Santa.” It tells the story of a young man named Nick, who falls in love with a beautiful girl named Anna. But their love becomes complicated when Nick becomes friends with a reindeer named Blitzen and hears of a once-in-a-lifetime contest to gain magical powers.

“We wrote it to be true to the spirit of Christmas -- people giving generously,” Judah says. “We wanted it to be entertaining for parents, too, because we hope they’ll read it with their children.”

The novel is a first for Judah, who previously wrote for films, television and magazines. But he was guided through by Todd, who has also written “Grounded,” another children’s novel, as well as adult fare “The Conservative’s Dictionary” and “Cain and Abel.” But the two worked so well together that they teamed up for a humor collection, “Psych-Out Golf,” which will be out next year.

“We had a lot of fun writing this story,” Judah says. “My father and I enjoyed surprising each other with comedic dialogue, quirky characters [and] plot twists.”
