FAIRFIELD, Conn. Fairfield got a new addition to its Town Hall Green Tuesday morning. The Tree Wardens Association of Connecticut gave the town a Norway Spruce as a Thanksgiving gift.
The association picks a town each year to receive the honor for promoting the spread of trees within its borders. Keith Mitchell, the organizations Tree Committee chair, said Fairfield was an easy choice.
I knew Ken would do a good job with it, Mitchell said of Tree Warden Ken Placko and Fairfields Forestry Committee. With some other places, you might as well place it in a landfill.
First Selectman Michael Tetreau said he was honored to accept the tree on behalf of the town. He added that it was a sign of how well the town and the state treats its trees. Connecticut is one of the most heavily forested states in the country, second only to Maine in trees per square mile, according to Mitchell.
To some degree, trees are a very natural part of our feel. And you notice it more when you move away from town, Tetreau said. I could never explain to my friends in southern California how it is in the summer, when you drive down a road and its almost like youre going through a tunnel.
