Over the weekend, as a part of the Sandy Ground Project Where Angels Play, volunteers will be building a playground in honor of Jessica Rekos to reflect her favorite colors as well as her love of horses and orca whales.
The Fairfield playground is the ninth of 26 playgrounds to be built and the fourth in Connecticut. Westport finished its Sandy Ground Project playground in June in honor of Dylan Hockley.
Fairfield Assistant Fire Chief Chris Tracey said Jessica was chosen to be honored in Fairfield because her mother had graduated Fairfield University with an undergraduate degree in marketing and a graduates degree in elementary education and continues to have close ties with the community.
The playgrounds are being built to honor a number of events, the events of Sept. 11, the number of people and communities hit by Hurricane Sandy and in memory of the 26 students and teachers who lost their lives at Sandy Hook Elementary School.
Fairfield Parks and Recreation are in the process of removing a swing set from the Penfield Beach area where the new playground will go, and the new equipment will be arriving in town Thursday.
“We start Friday morning, and we end Saturday night,” said Tracey. There will be a ribbon cutting Saturday, Sept. 14, at 6 p.m. at the site. “It will be the only [playground] in line of sight of the towers.”
