Fairfield Teens Tell Cancer To 'Beat It'

Cara Wagner and Shaun Connelly wanted to pull off two good deeds with one project. First, they had their confirmation coming up at St. Thomas Aquinas Church and needed to complete community service hours. But they also wanted to honor Shaun's cousin, Ryan Brennan, who is undergoing treatment for cancer.

The two Tomlinson Middle School eighth-graders found their solution by combining Lance Armstrong with Michael Jackson. Cara and Shaun sold rubber bracelets (á la the Livestrong campaign) branded with the words "Just Beat It." The slogan was the name of the Ryan's team in the Walk for Hope in the last two summers at Jennings Beach in Fairfield.

Together, Cara and Shaun raised $2,000 from their sales campaign. They donated the money to CancerCare in Norwalk, which provides support services for patients undergoing cancer treatment and their families.
