Fairfield Scouts Help Bridgeport's Homeless

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – A group of Fairfield Cub Scouts made about 300 afternoons better this week. The Stratfield area’s Pack 197 made hundreds of bag lunches for the Bridgeport Rescue Mission Wednesday night.

“This is such a fun event, and the pack really rallies around such community service projects,” Pack leader Jeff Zakim said in an email.

The Cub Scout Pack holds its “Brown Bag Lunch” for the Bridgeport charity every year. The kids pack lunches of sandwiches, fruit and a snack bar for shipping to the Rescue Mission. The lunches went to the center’s homeless clientele the next day.

The kids and their families also got a visit from Paul Bryon, the Bridgeport Rescue Mission’s chef. An Eagle Scout himself, Bryon told the scouts about community service and how it will help the people he sees every day at the shelter.

“As with all Pack 197 events, the element of community and giving back is always encouraged,” Zakim added. “Preparing these lunches for those in our community who may be less fortunate provides a great example for our pack of how we can all find ways to help out.”
