FAIRFIELD, Conn.Tony Hwang is ready for new challenge. Hwang, one of Fairfields state representatives, will bike 25 miles Saturday in the Connecticut Challenge. The annual cycling event raises money for cancer programs throughout Fairfield County.
Nearly everyone knows someone who is battling cancer or has battled cancer, Hwang said. This event is about supporting the ones we love and helping them through the trials and traumas that go along with fighting and beating cancer.
This is the second year Hwang will ride the 25-mile route in the Challenge, which also has 50- and 100-mile rides. He will ride for Team Sclafani, in honor of Fairfield resident Pat Sclafani, a four-year cancer survivor. You can learn more about Pats experience in this video.
Hwang was also one of the representatives who this week hosted ride founder Jeff Keith and Executive Director Bob Mazzone at the state capitol for Connecticut Challenge Day. Hwang and State Sen. Eric Coleman, D-Hartford, invited Keith and Mazzone to talk with legislators about the work their organization does.
Most people dont realize that after a person is diagnosed with cancer and undergoes the radical treatments of chemotherapy, surgery and radiation that they are forever changed. Even if they make it through, which happily over 67 percent do, their bodies are different, said Mazzone. Developing and funding resources that help cancer survivors live longer, happier, healthier lives is our mission.
The Connecticut Challenge starts Saturday, July 30, at the Fairfield County Hunt Club in Westport. To make a donation, visit the organizations website.
