“Wonder” is the sixth book chosen for the annual program run by the Fairfield Public Library and the Pequot Library. Each year the libraries’ staffs, volunteers and community partners choose a book they hope will spark a town-wide conversation. This year’s theme will be “choosing kindness.”
The novel will be the centerpiece of a month of lectures, movie screenings, discussions and other events at the town’s libraries and universities. The program will culminate with a visit from the author on March 14.
“Wonder” tells the story of August Pullman, a young boy born with a facial deformity. He had been kept out of school until the events of the book, which see him enter fifth grade at Beecher Prep. “Wonder” describes how August struggles to fit in to normal school life.
Along with events around town, the library will also hold its third annual One Book One Town writing contest. Fairfield residents can submit pieces that are 300 words or less to the library from now until Feb. 14. This year’s theme is “What does the concept of kindness mean to you?” Winners will have their work published in a collection later this year and will be invited to a reception with Palacio during her visit to Fairfield.
