FAIRFIELD, Conn. Cait Lyddy has spent the past five years bringing her passion to the town of Westport. Now the Fairfield native will do the same in her hometown Sunday. Lyddy opens her new business, Fairfield Pilates, in Sportsplex on Mill Plain Road this weekend.
Designing a new studio space for Fairfield Pilates at the Sportsplex was a tremendous opportunity to bring a method of fitness that I feel passionate about to the community in which I grew up, Lyddy said.
Born and raised in Fairfield, Lyddy left to pursue her first love dance. She spent 15 years in New York City working as a ballet and modern dancer. It was during her tenure in the Manhattan theater scene that she discovered Pilates.
The exercise method stresses flexibility and core strength. Lyddy says her adoption of the workout routine more than 20 years ago helped her deal with the problems that hit many in her profession after retirement. Fifteen years of rigorous movement left her spine and joints with little protective cartilage, which can cause severe pain to those who dont deal with it.
Pilates is a highly effective way to strengthen the body without putting excessive stress on your joints, Lyddy said. "If it weren't for Pilates, I'd likely be dealing with hip and knee replacements.
Lyddy studied her craft at the Kane School of Core Integration and is now a member of Pilates Method Alliance. After moving back to Fairfield County in 2003 with her husband and two children, she began teaching near her new home in Weston. She even did a tour at what was then the Pilates Studio of Fairfield before opening her own business, Westport Pilates, in 2006. Now she will take over her old employer in Fairfield and move it to Sportsplex.
You can check out Fairfield Pilates in a special Grand Opening tour and Open House on Sunday, June 19, from 2 to 5 p.m. Lyddy and her staff will perform demonstrations all afternoon and host two free trial classes beginning at 2 and 4 p.m. If you cant make it Sunday, you can reach Lyddy by dropping by the studio at 85 Mill Plain Road or by calling 203-255-1246.
