Fairfield National Kicks Off 2011 Season

It’s official: Spring has arrived. Fairfield Fire Chief Richard Felner kicked off the season at Tunxis Hill Park on Saturday, throwing out the first pitch at the Fairfield National Little League's opening ceremonies.

Nearly 400 kids ages 5 to 12 and their parents and coaches celebrated the start of the baseball schedule with the singing of the national anthem and a talk on sportsmanship and fair play. The 2011 season marks the 60th anniversary of Fairfield National Little League, which draws kids from the eastern side of town. Felner was a player during that inaugural season and captained the league’s first All-Star team.

After the ceremonies, the day continued with a quadruple-header in the Majors division at Tunxis Hill. The A&S Italian Fine Foods Cardinals beat the Batting Cage Blue Jays, 7-6. The NEJ Yankees topped the Fairfield PAL Rays, 7-4. The Subway Sandwich Twins blew out the Country Cow A’s, 13-1. And the Westport Auto Craft Mets overtook the Clubhouse White Sox, 6-5. The action continued Sunday, with the Triple Play Red Sox beating the Universal Printing Pirates, 12-8.
