Fairfield Meet-and-Greets Collide

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — David Becker and I both set out to meet Fairfielders Friday afternoon. As your trusty town reporter, I was hunkered down in Las Vetas Lounge with Managing Editor Matt Zalaznick for TheDailyFairfield’s monthly office hours. Becker, a Representative Town Meeting member and candidate for First Selectman, was hopping around Fairfield’s downtown talking with business owners. So it’s not surprising that our paths crossed.

During this meeting of the minds Becker shared what he’d learned from the small businessmen he talked to Friday. He rattled off a number of ideas he’d heard along the way: gathering business owners and landlords together to lay out a plan for downtown development, implementing a trolley car or shuttle bus to help people navigate the Post Road easier and allowing Director of Community and Economic Development Mark Barnhart to focus more on his job than the third train station construction project.

“In my campaign, I take concepts that I think could happen … and I put them on the table and say, 'Let’s talk about them,’ ” Becker said. “I think that that’s important.”

Becker and I will meet again Monday night, when he debates fellow Republican candidates Robert Bellitto Jr. and Hugh Dolan in advance of their party’s caucus. Until then, both are ready to talk to anyone in Fairfield about what’s going on around town. So stop by my next office-hours session and join the conversation.
