to Help NYC Homeless

Five girls from Fairfield Warde High School participated in Midnight Run earlier this month in New York City. Midnight Run is a volunteer organization dedicated to finding a common ground between the housed and the homeless.

The group included Liliana Sorensen, Marissa Roberge, Sarah King, Leah Walsh and Kyle Harrington.

The girls’ interest in actively helping the homeless originated with their mother-daughter book club. One of the novels they discussed centered on the hardships and daily struggles of the homeless.

Inspired by the book, the girls and their mothers committed to assist Midnight Run. The group raised funds over the summer by creating handbags and selling them  at farmers’ markets. Additionally, they held a multi-family tag sale and organized clothing and backpack drives.

With the help of Volunteers on Call, book club members made and packaged over 150 lunches and organized a run into Manhattan, where they distributed backpacks, water bottles, clothing and toiletries to the homeless throughout the night.
