Fairfield Girl Scouts Learn First-Hand Lessons About Government At Work

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Girls Scouts from around Fairfield got a chance Wednesday to see their local government in action -- and even help run it -- on Girl Scouts in Government Day.

Local troops visited Independence Hall in Fairfield, and took tours of the police and fire departments, as well as several other local government offices.

"This is a great opportunity for them to learn about their town government, and all the different aspects of what the government does for them in their daily lives," said 12-year veteran Girl Scout Leader Suzanne Laginestra. "It really gives them a sense of the workings of the town. It also shows possible career paths for them.

"They learn about different jobs, and actually get a chance to do some of the jobs of the town official they're with. So it's a great way for them to experience what it would be like to work here."

The Town of Fairfield has been giving the Scout tours since the late 1970s, and they have remained popular.

"The response has been terrific," Laginestra said. "They love it. Sometimes they're nervous, they don't know what to expect coming in, and then they all just have a great time. The departments all go out of their way to really teach them and give them educational enrichment for the day. It's really great."
