The Fairfield Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation made its first round of donations on Jan. 12. The group handed out checks totaling more than $10,000 to three local organizations.

“It’s a great day for us,” foundation Treasurer Joe Rainis said at the ceremony, “because we get to see results of many long, hard hours of work that our members put in to help raise this money for these great groups.”

A $1,455 check went to the “Get In Touch Foundation,” which promotes early detection programs for breast cancer in young women. The money came from sales of special pink t-shirts firefighters wore last October for Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

The foundation also donated $4,500 to the Muscular Dystrophy Association, the recipients of the local firefighters’ union’s annual “Fill the Boot” fund-raiser around Fairfield. “The IAFF [International Association of Fire Fighters] and Local 1426 have been long time supporters of the work that MDA does,” according to foundation Secretary Chris Tracy, “and we’re very proud to continue on with that tradition.”

Another $4,500 donation went to the newly renovated Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital. A Fairfield firefighter was treated at the center last year  for injuries sustained on the job, said Phil Higgins, a  Charitable Foundation board of directors member.

“We’re happy to be able to pay it forward and make this Center a place where the best care is given to the victims who need it,” Higgins added.

Fairfield’s firefighters will join departments from Stratford and Norwalk in the Second Annual Wine and Beer Tasting Event on Feb. 21 from 6:00 to 10:00 p.m. at the Trumbull Marriott to benefit the Connecticut Burn Center at Bridgeport Hospital. Tickets for the event are $25, and may be obtained by emailing FFFCF@iaff.org or contacting the Fairfield Fire Fighters Charitable Foundation on Facebook.
