Fairfield Dems Honor Young Star, Top Volunteer

Barbara Rifkin said she’s just “following in the family business.” Heather Dean said she is just following the advice of her sister. In both cases, their fellow Fairfield Democrats felt their work around town deserved to be noticed. Rifkin and Dean received annual awards from the Fairfield Democratic Town Committee this Sunday.

Rifkin, currently on the Parks and Recreation Commission, but also a former town legislator and Board of Education member, earned the Eunice Postol Community Service Award for her volunteer work. The award is named after her mother, a former selectman in Fairfield. U.S. Sen. Richard Blumenthal said in a speech honoring Rifkin that her work shows “there is no limit to the amount of good you can do if you don’t care who gets the credit.”

Dean, a former member of the Representative Town Meeting and the Osborn Hill and Roger Ludlowe PTAs, received the Denise Dougiello “Young Turk Award.” Named after the former selectman, the award goes each year to a relatively new member of the party who “has contributed in an exceptional way to moving it to the future.

In her acceptance speech, Dean thanked her family, particularly her sister, who she said told her, “Even if your voice shakes, use it.”
