Fairfield Dems Honor Two for Community Service

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – The Fairfield Democratic Town Committee named volunteer Shelley Cryan and Representative Town Meeting member Jay Wolk as their service award winners for 2012. Both Cryan and Wolk were given their awards at the DTC’s annual Century Club brunch Sunday at the Patterson Club.

Cryan was given the group’s Eunice Postol Community Service Award. Each year the honor goes to a Fairfield Democrat for “undying dedication to community service.” Cryan was chosen for her work with Fairfield’s PTAs and as a coach for girls softball and Odyssey of the Mind programs.

Cryan also led a group of Fairfield middle school students on a trip to Africa to help repair a school. She is currently vice president of Humanity Now, a non-profit organization founded by Fairfield teachers that connects children around the world for learning, cultural exchange and fundraising for humanitarian efforts.

The Denise Dougiello “Young Turk” Award goes to a newer member of Fairfield’s DTC who “has contributed in an exceptional way to moving it to the future.” Wolk received the honor as a new member of Fairfield’s legislature, the Representative Town Meeting.

Wolk is also president of the Dogwood Green Association and a member of the Fairfield Public School's Climate Team on Bullying. He is also the Fairfield PTA Council’s liaison to the First Selectman’s office, keeping the town’s 19 parent-teacher groups up to date with activities at Town Hall.
