Fairfield Churchgoers Gear Up to do Good Works

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – You won’t find the members of Fairfield’s First Church Congregational in the pews this Sunday. You’ll more likely spot them at construction sites, homeless shelters or even combing Fairfield’s beaches. May 6 marks the Beach Road congregation’s second “Sunday of Service.”

Pastors David Spollett and Jennifer Habetz started the program last spring. The two will encourage their parishioners to “remember and celebrate the Empty Tomb of the first century by recognizing the suffering people who are entombed today by the ills of the world, and to leave their pews to roll back the stones that weigh down God’s people today. The world doesn’t need more empty words of praise; it needs authentic followers who will act in Christ-like ways.”

About two hundred congregation members have already signed up to participate in the day’s projects. Some will head to Fairfield’s shoreline to gather trash. Two teams will act as building crews: one at a new home for Habitat for Humanity in Bridgeport, the other making repairs on a Fairfield home through Rebuilding Together.

Other groups will cook meals for two homeless shelters, Fairfield’s Operation Hope and Bridgeport’s Merton House. Volunteers will also help Operation Hope install its new vegetable garden. Other projects include painting rooms at the Janus House Youth Shelter, organizing books for the Summer Book Project at Bridgeport’s Madison School and hosting an afternoon tea and piano concert for seniors from Parish Court Elderly Housing.

“When David Spollett first proposed the idea of a Sunday of Service, I must admit that it was somewhat overwhelming," Outreach Board chair Linda Gibbons said in a press release. "But last year the members of First Church rose to the occasion, committed to the ‘servant’ identity that we embrace. I am sure that this second annual Sunday of Service will be a success as well.”
