'Eating Animals' Author To Visit Fairfield

Have you gotten around to reading “Eating Animals,” the Fairfield Library’s One Book, One Town selection? Author Jonathan Safran Foer will speak at Roger Ludlowe Middle School Thursday night as the signature event for the program. He’ll talk about his investigation into the farms, fisheries and slaughterhouses where most Americans’ get their food.

But the library has events tied in with Foer’s book all month to keep the conversation going. Here’s a rundown of the rest of the events this month:

? Kids can get in on the fun on Saturday, March 12, starting at 11 a.m. at Fairfield Woods Branch Library. Sport Hill Farm’s Patti Popp will stop by for “Little Chick Storytime.” Popp will help kids make crafts and tell stories and let them pet a few of her tiny, fuzzy friends.

? Fairfield University professors Dina Franceschi and Brian G. Walker will host a roundtable titled “Eating Animals: Eating Humanely” on Monday, March 14, starting at 7 p.m. Franceschi, an economics teacher, and Walker, from the biology department, will discuss how people can eat meat with less guilt. The talk will take place in the university’s Di-Menna Nyselius Library Multimedia Room.

? Bill Deusing, executive director of the Northeast Organic Farming Association of Connecticut, will speak at the library Tuesday, March 15, starting at 7. His focus will be on how locally grown food is gaining more popularity in Connecticut.

? For those who keep kosher, Ellin Yassky will lead “Let’s Eat: Food in Jewish Life and Tradition,” a discussion on the importance of food in the Jewish tradition. Yassky will be at the Library on March 21, starting at 7 p.m.

? If you’re looking to get more creative, the Fairfield Arts Center’s One Book, One Town event might be for you. On March 23, it’s hosting an “Altered Books Workshop” inspired by Foer’s latest book, “Tree of Codes.” The center’s artists will help Fairfielders transform old books into new works of art.

? Foer’s book isn’t the first to examine how Americans get their food. The Pequot Library will host a talk comparing “Eating Animals” to one of its most infamous predecessors, Upton Sinclair’s “The Jungle.” The Southport fixture will hold its discussion March 29 starting at 7 p.m.

? Having trouble finding ways to make dinner when someone in your family is a vegetarian? You can get advice on how to handle it on March 16 at Roger Ludlowe Middle School. “Feeding the Mixed Table” will give families tips on how to manage meals to make everyone happy.
