Easton Banjos Strum Holiday Hits in Fairfield

Holiday rhythms echoed throughout the Community Theatre in Fairfield on Sunday, compliments of the Easton Banjo Society. Scores of children, parents and couples came out to shake their legs and kick up their heels as the 14-member ensemble played nearly two dozen songs, including 1930s tunes and Christmas classics.

The event was held to benefit filmscool.org, a program that introduces film and video to young people with little access to these creative outlets. It is part of the Community Film Institute, which was started by Mick Reed of the Easton Banjo Society and Community Theatre owner Leo Redgate.

The program operates out of the Burroughs Community Center on Fairfield Avenue in Bridgeport, though the founders have expressed interest in expanding to other locations.

The Easton Banjo Society has been around for more than half a century. Founding member Bob Chamberlain is still jamming with the band at age 95. The group is constantly evolving. The current lineup plays a variety of banjos and other instruments, including tenor, plectrum, five-string, mandolin, guitar-style banjos, piano, sousaphone, drums and washboard.
