Dinner Brings in $6,000 for Fairfielders' Charity

FAIRFIELD, Conn. – Charlene Lebo and Suzanne DeSantie received a nice gift Tuesday evening. The Fairfield sisters stopped by Chip’s Family Restaurant, and took home a $6,000 donation for the charity they run in their husbands’ memory.

Both the sisters’ husbands, Keith Lebo and Jim DeSantie, died from pancreatic cancer in the past few years. The two decided in 2010 to start A Night of Music, an annual concert to benefit Swim Across the Sound. Last year they helped start the Lebo-DeSantie Center for Pancreatic and Liver Diseases at St. Vincent’s Medical Center.

Before last November’s Night of Music show, Lebo contacted Chip’s owner George Chatzopoulos about making a donation. “He said, ‘I’ll do you one better,’” Lebo said.

The restaurant hosted a pancake dinner on Dec. 12, with all proceeds going to the charity. More than 200 Fairfielders turned out for the dinner. In the end they raised $6,000 for the Lebo-DeSantie Center. Lebo and DeSantie accepted the check Tuesday, in front of their family members, who also act as the center’s chief volunteers.

“With our community of like-minded people, we’re trying to raise money with grassroots on the ground,” Lebo said. “We’re both determined to fight his disease.”
