Bridgeport Moms, Kids Learn Together

Just because Fairfield and Bridgeport’s schools were on vacation last week, that doesn’t mean there wasn’t plenty of learning going on. Bridgeport’s Mercy Learning Center used the time to host a three-day “Winter Writers’ Workshop” for its adult students and their children to learn together. Local author Lizzy Rockwell and artist Kathleen Baden gave their interactive lessons.

“When these children return to school next week, they will certainly have a lot to share with their classmates about what they did on their winter school vacation,” said Lynn Davies, program facilitator at Mercy Learning Center.

Rockwell shared her talents as an author and an illustrator to show the students how pictures work with stories. She started with a card game with Joseph, a young boy who attended the workshop. He drew three picture cards – Goldilocks, a fish and a diamond ring – and built a story around those elements. Rockwell illustrated the story on an easel and then invited the children to create their own stories.

Baden, an artist and dramatist from Monroe, used storytelling, dance and music to teach lessons in penguins and mittens, fitting for the winter setting. She also led a craft-making session, helping kids write and illustrate their stories. Each child took home his or her own book, complete with a unique story, drawings, a dedication page, and author biography and photograph.

Mercy Learning Center specializes in literacy and life-training classes for low-income women in the greater Bridgeport area. For more information on the program, visit its website or call 203-334-6699.
