Fairfield's Bigelow Center Announces Lifelong Learners Sessions in March

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Bigelow Center, in Fairfield, is hosting a "Tuesdays in March" series, composed of $5 single-session courses, offered by the Lifelong Learners Board.

"Travel in Tales and Pictures to the Emerald Isle" -- Tuesday, March 1, from 1-3 p.m. -- Dr. Ralph and Eleanor Burke, frequent visitors to Ireland, will offer a glimpse of the country's magnificent landscapes as well as a taste of Celtic culture.

"The Maya: A Classic View" -- Tuesday, March 8, from 10 a.m. to noon -- Dave Pressler, a Connecticut photographer, artist and hiker, will share a visual experience of the ruins of several Mayan. This program will be held in the second floor conference room of the Sullivan Independence Hall. A bus will leave from the Center and return after the program.

"Barking Up the Right Tree" -- Tuesday March 8, from 1-3 p.m. -- Fairfield Police Department K-9 Officers Kevin Wells and Evan Kaesmann will be joined by their K-9 partners, Jagger and Maverick.

"Maestra/Teacher: Revolution Through a Pencil" -- Tuesday, March 15, from 10 a.m. to noon -- Professor Michelle Leigh Farrell, will present and discuss a documentary film, "Maestra," which captures the testimonies of women who were volunteer teachers in the 1961 Cuban literacy campaign.

"Nigeria Revisited: My Life and Loves Abroad" -- Tuesday, March 15, from 1-3 p.m. -- Catherine Onyemelukwe will tell her own remarkable story, that of a Midwestern American woman who joined the Peace Corps to teach in Nigeria. Her contract was for two years, but she stayed for more than two decades, marrying a native Nigerian and raising three children there.

"Connecticut and the Civil War" -- Tuesday, March 22, from 10 a.m. to noon -- Charles Allen will discuss Connecticut's role in slavery, before, during and after the Civil War.

Other programs include "Inside Sing-Sing" and "Migration Through Time." You can find the full course brochure here, or at the Bigelow Center's front desk. The Center is urging folks to register early, because such courses are often popular.
