Fairfield Police To Collect Unused Prescription Medicines

FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- The Fairfield Police Department, in cooperation with the U.S. Drug Enforcement Administration, is offering residents a chance to clean out their medicine cabinets of expired or unused prescription pills and patches with Saturday's Drug Take Back Day in Fairfield.

Between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Saturday, people can anonymously drop off drugs for disposal at the Fairfield Police Department, 100 Reef Road. It is free and no questions will be asked, officials said.

No needles, liquids or sharps can be collected. For more details on what is collected, visit the DEA website.

The idea behind the DEA's Drug Take Back effort is to try to prevent drugs from getting into the wrong hands, and also to dispose of them safely. It isn't safe to flush old drugs down the toilet or throw away in the trash, officials said.

This is the 12th time in six years for the drug collection in Fairfield. Last spring, more than 893,000 pounds of prescription drugs was collected at about 5,400 sites nationwide. Since the program started more than a decade ago, more than 3,200 tons of pills have been collected, officials said.
