A docent will take you on a private tour of the museum’s exhibit "Coming Home" via Skype. When Skype is projected onto the large screen in the Library’s Rotary Room, it allows you to view exhibits up close and converse with the docent as you tour. Join the library for this “visit” on Wednesday, March 11, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road. Registration is requested.
The Abbe Museum borrowed objects from museums from Philadelphia to Maine for the "Coming Home" exhibit. From baskets to beadwork, woodcarvings to birch bark canoes, tools to artwork, many pieces of Wabanaki material culture have ended up in museums far away from the Wabanaki homeland. Wabanaki culture includes the Abenaki, Mikmaq, Maliseet, Penobscot, and Passamaquoddy tribes.
When reference associate Lauren DeNisco made a presentation about the library’s innovative Skype-a-Docent program to the New England Museum Association (NEMA) this year, she was able to develop new partnerships for future Skype tours, including the Abbe Museum.
Skype-a-Docent is an extension of the library’s Homebound Service that has been delivering library books and other materials to residents for over 20 years. Last year over 1,200 items were delivered by volunteers to five senior living facilities and to individuals living in their own homes.
Now they are able to “deliver” tours of cultural interest to seniors and others who may not be able to travel out of town.
In addition to the monthly presentation at the main library, Skype-a-Docent tours are brought to two senior living facilities in town. Tours aren’t just for seniors, they are open to all.
