Bridgeport resident and freelance photographer Karyn Leito said you don’t have to use a professional camera to take great photos. All you need is an iPhone and some patience. A little app help also works. She recommends editing your photos with VSCOcam, Snapseed, and Afterlight.

Here, she offers more tips.

  • Use natural light when you can and ideally, get outside. If you can’t get outside the next best way is find natural light coming in from a window.
  • Use fall as your backdrop. Leito said she loves photographing kids in trees and outdoor landscapes. Her best recommendation is to find a place you all feel comfortable.
  • If taking photos, indoors use props.
  • Don’t spend time posing. Some of the best photographs are natural observations. Take time to watch your subject and their reactions.
  • Use apps. The shots she took of her son as a skekelton (shown in photo) were taken with her phone.
  • Don’t be afraid to experiment and have patience. Digital photography makes it easy to delete and start over.
