CT Rides week is a program started by Gov. Dannel Malloy last year to encourage residents to find ways to keep cars off the road. Malloy has asked residents to use a greener form of transportation at least one day this week, including riding a bike, walking, taking public transportation or carpooling.

"As a former bicycle commuter and vanpool rider, I know first-hand the many benefits these alternatives provide,” Selectman and Bike and Pedestrian Safety Committee member Cristin McCarthy-Vahey said in a press release. “Each small step we take will not only benefit our environment, but could also save money for commuters and be a step towards a healthier lifestyle."

Friday is also “Bike to Work Day” in Fairfield. The Fairfield Bike-Walk Coalition organized an event to celebrate the occasion at Chef’s Table on the Post Road Friday morning. Anyone who arrives by bike or on foot to the event will receive free pastries and coffee, and Zane’s of Fairfield will offer free bike tuning to riders. The event runs from 7 to 9 a.m. on May 17 at 1561 Post Road.
