Beyond Pumpkin: Fairfield County Bakeries Dish Up Variety Of Pies

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- A good pie can remedy any Thanksgiving meal, including any dysfunctional family dynamics.

Sweeten the day with to-go options that are as good as Grandma used to make -- and quite probably better. Just order early (as is now); Nov. 26 will be here before you know it.

Aux Délices Gourmet Foods, with locations in Darien, Greenwich, Riverside and Westport has apple pie, gluten free apple, pecan pie, apple cheesecake pie, and pumpkin. Order by Saturday, Nov. 21. 

Beardsley’s Orchards (278 Leavenworth Road, Shelton, 203-926-1098): Talk about homey goodness straight from the farm.Pies are available fresh or frozen and include apple, apple-crumb, peach, pumpkin, pecan, blueberry, coconut cream, fruit-n-berries and more. 

City Limits Diner (135 Harvard Ave., Stamford, 203-348-7000) Spiced pumpkin pie, pecan and Wild Turkey bourbon, cinnamon apple crisp, flourless chocolate truffle torte, and pumpkin and Tahitian vanilla bean cheesecake are on the menu at City Limits where Chef Tracy Kamperdyk Assue makes approximately 400-450 pies and 50 “other” types of desserts each holiday season. The deadline for ordering is Sunday, Nov. 15. 

Michele's Pies (666 Main Ave, Norwalk, 203-354-7144) is famous for its country apple, apple crumb, apple cranberry crunch and maple pumpkin with pecan streusel, but you'll also find lots of other delectable goodies including sugar-free blueberry, lemon meringue, pumpkin and pineapple mango with a macadamia coconut crumb.

The American Pie Company (29 Route 37, Sherman, 860-350-0662) has a long list of available pies including pumpkin, coconut custard, chocolate cream, harvest fruit, sugar-fee apple, Italian ricotta, German chocolate, and so on, along with a few gluten-free options. Pie orders are taken until the day before Thanksgiving.

Saugatuck Sweets (575 Riverside Ave., Westport, 203-642-4615) offers apple crumb, blueberry crumb, pecan pie, lemon meringue, mincemeat, cherry crumb, key lime and pumpkin pie. Even sweeter: $2 from every pie sold will support the work of Al's Angels. All orders must be placed by Friday, Nov. 20.
