One medium-sized black bear was spotted Saturday behind a Quail Run Road home. It moved very slowly, wasn’t afraid of people and was chased off by an animal control officer.
A Brett Lane resident reported a small black bear there Saturday, but police were unable to locate it.
Since the sightings were on the same day and relatively close together, police assumed it to be the same bear.
If you see a bear, you’re asked to call Fairfield Animal Control at 203-254-4857. If it appears to be a potential danger, you can also call the police non-emergency number, 203-254-4800.
In case of an emergency, call 911.
In the wilderness, bears usually avoid people. However, here are some safety tips, should you stumble upon one:
- Enjoy the bear from a distance.
- Let the bear know you’re there by shouting and waving your arms or walk slowly away.
- Don’t attempt to feed or attract bears.
To avoid attracting bears:
- Remove bird feeders from late March through November.
- Wait until the morning of collection to bring out trash.
- Add a few capfuls of ammonia to trash to mask food odors and keep containers with tight lids in a garage or shed.
- Don’t leave pet food outside overnight.
- Store livestock food in airtight containers.
- Do not add meats or sweet-smelling fruit rinds to compost piles.
- Throughly clean grills after use.
- Don’t intentionally feed bears.
