Schenker, a dean at Yale in New Haven, will present his sixth installment of the "How to Read a Film" series with three lectures and screenings in April and May on Hawks' movies "Scarface," "His Girl Friday," and "Rio Bravo."

Hawks (1896-1977) made 46 movies in a variety of genres, including war movies and westerns, romantic films and comedies. He's considered one of the great American directors though he's not widely known, library officials said.

Schenker, a senior associate dean of Yale College, and dean of academic affairs, has held book and film discussions in Connecticut for more than 25 years. In this series, films will be shown on Mondays followed by discussions on Thursday evenings.

"Scarface," will be shown at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 18, with a discussion at 7 p.m. on Thursday, April 21. "His Girl Friday," is screened at 2 p.m. on Monday, April 25, with the discussion planned at 7 p.m. Thursday, April 28.

The third film, "Rio Bravo," is scheduled for screening at 2 p.m. on Monday, May 9, and discussion at 7 p.m. on Thursday, May 12.

Both the screenings and the discussions take place in the Rotary Room at the Fairfield Public Library, 1080 Old Post Road. All programs are free, but library officials ask anyone interested to register for each event separately.
