FAIRFIELD, Conn. -- Sacred Heart University in Fairfield will host a celebration and reflection in honor of Martin Luther King, Jr. on Thursday, Jan. 21 at University Commons.

Keynote speaker David E. Kirkland will present his talk, “The Truth That I Owe You: Making Black Lives Matter in Classrooms.”

Kirkland is the executive director at New York University’s Metropolitan Center for Research on Equity and the Transformation of Schools. He is also associate professor of English and urban education at New York University.

The event is sponsored by the Office of Volunteer Programs & Service Learning and United Campus Alliance. It's free and open to the public.

Sacred Heart University, the second-largest independent Catholic university in New England, offers more than 70 undergraduate, graduate, doctoral and certificate programs on its main campus in Fairfield, and satellites in Connecticut, Luxembourg and Ireland.

The event starts at 10 a.m.

Sacred Heart University is at 5151 Park Ave., Fairfield.
