Ghashghaei began sharing stories with Snyder in 1990. Gradually, the authors became aware that her tales were metaphors for the larger human struggle so they began to write them down.
The book begins nearly a century ago as Mahru's grandfather escapes the Russian Revolution and builds a new life in Northern Iran. It continues through the final years of the Shah and the Iran-Iraq War.
