Fairfield Remembers 9/11 With Memorial Event

FAIRFIELD COUNTY, Conn. -- As has been the custom for over a decade, a host of Fairfield County communities will honor Sept. 11 in their own ways. 

Thursday, Sept. 10:
Events kick off Thursday, Sept. 10, with a 5:30 p.m. statewide Memorial Ceremony at Sherwood Island State Park in Westport.

The state's official memorial to the victims of the terror attacks is located on a peninsula at the state park, where residents gathered on that day in 2001 and observed the devastation of the attacks on Lower Manhattan across Long Island Sound. The site was also used as a staging area for Connecticut's relief efforts to New York City.

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy and Lt. Governor Nancy Wyman will be in attendance with other officials, families and the public.

Friday, Sept. 11:

Danbury: The city is holding a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony at 6 p.m. in Elmwood Park on Main Street.

Darien: The Darien Monuments and Ceremonies Commission will hold its event at 8:30 a.m. at the 9/11 Memorial behind Middlesex Middle School at 204 Hollow Tree Ridge Road. A moment of silence will be observed at 8:46 a.m., the time when the first plane struck the World Trade Center.

Fairfield: The 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony begins at 9 a.m. at the Fire Headquarters at 140 Reef Road. 

Greenwich: A new 9/11 memorial will be formally unveiled at 9 a.m. at Cos Cob Park on Sound Shore Drive.

Another ceremony honoring 9/11 victims, first responders and military personnel is set for 6 p.m. at the Glenville Firehouse, 266 Glenville Road.

New Canaan: At 9:55 a.m., the Town of New Canaan will be hosting a brief ceremony on the front steps of Town Hall to remember those lost in the 9/11 attacks. All are welcome to enjoy refreshments afterward at New Canaan Fire Headquarters. 

Norwalk: The annual 9/11 Remembrance will take place at 8:30 a.m. in the plaza by the front entrance of City Hall. In case of rain, the event will be held at the Community Room in City Hall.

Also in Norwalk, at 8:40 a.m. Norwalk Community College President David L. Levinson will lead an observance of the 14th anniversary of the terror attacks on the World Trade Center in the East Campus atrium.

The open-to-the-public remembrance ceremony will include an open mic session for anyone who would like to share their thoughts. NCC is located at 188 Richards Ave.

Ridgefield: All are invited to a 9/11 Memorial Service starting at 6:30 p.m. at the Ridgefield Parks & Recreation Center, 195 Danbury Road.

Stamford: The Jackie Robinson Park of Fame, located at the corner of Richmond Hill Avenue and West Main Street, is the site of a 9/11 ceremony honoring the lives of the 10 city residents who lost their lives that day.

The event, held at 12:30 p.m., includes a roster of speakers including Mayor David Martin, Police Chief Jon Fontneau and Deputy Fire Chief Tim Conroy.

Stamford firefighters are hosting their own Memorial at 7 p.m. in downtown Stamford. The solemn ceremony will take place at Engine Company 5, located on 1620 Washington Blvd. Those who attend are welcome to bring votive candles and/or flowers.

Weston: The town will honor and remember those who were lost in a ceremony at 8:30 a.m. in front of Town Hall.
