Join reference librarian and film buff Philip Bahr as he hosts the showing of two of his favorites, "White Christmas" Dec. 6 and "Christmas in Connecticut" Dec. 13.
Both films will be shown for free at 2 p.m. in the Rotary Room at the Main Library, 1080 Old Post Road. Registration is requested.
Perennial favorite "White Christmas" has been nudging us into the holiday spirit for more than six decades. With an outstanding Irving Berlin score, Bing Crosby, Danny Kaye, Vera Ellen and Rosemary Clooney star in this breezy tale of former Army pals who make it big in show business.
One night they meet a sister act and end up in Vermont together helping their old captain save his inn. You’ll laugh, sing along, and maybe shed a few tears.
Bahr will dazzle you with his encyclopedic knowledge of the film and offer his own ideas on what would be the perfect remake while encouraging the reintroduction of the word schmaltz into our vernacular.
Connecticut has an official holiday film in "Christmas in Connecticut."
Barbara Stanwyck and Dennis Morgan star in this romantic comedy about mistaken identity. Stanwyck plays a hard-working home and family magazine writer who doesn’t know a thing about domestic life. Her publisher has no idea she’s a fraud and invites a war hero to her non-existent Connecticut home for Christmas dinner. Everyone scrambles to create the perfect facade and hopefully keep their jobs.
Meanwhile Stanwyck’s character meets the soldier and falls instantly in love. Only one problem: she’s already got a boyfriend who’s masquerading as her husband.
Bahr will introduce the film with a brief overview of Stanwyck’s career, discuss the brilliance of S. Z. Sakall’s Uncle Felix character and deconstruct what made Morgan such a dreamboat.
