The book discussion starts with “Eat My Words: Reading Women's Lives Through the Cookbooks They Wrote” by Janet Theophano. This is the first in a series of five different titles, and one reader’s choice title, running from April through November. The discussions are free, open to the public and offered in daytime and evening programs.
Some people think that a cookbook is just a collection of recipes for dishes that feed the body. In “Eat My Words,” Theophano shows that cookbooks provide food for the mind and the soul as well.
This discussion is also available Thursday from 7-8 p.m. Subsequent discussions include:
- “The Cookbook Collector” by Allegra Goodman, Wednesday, May 20, from 1-2 p.m. and Thursday, May 21, from 7-8 p.m.
- “The Short Life and Long Times of Mrs. Beeton” by Kathryn Hughes, Tuesday, June 16, from 1-2 p.m. and 7-8 p.m.

Beyond the Book Club is more than just a book club. Taking inspiration from Pequot Library’s founder, Virginia Marquand Monroe, this book club focuses on Pequot Library’s mission, "Bringing Literature, Music, Art, Science & the Humanities to Our Community." While the book club themes center on women and women’s issues, they are open to both men and women.
All classes and programs are open to everyone. Click here for more information or call the library at 203-259-0346, ext. 15.
