The announcement was made by Charles V. Firlotte, president and CEO of Aquarion.
Herlihy previously served as the company’s director of water quality and environmental management. His new role includes expanded responsibilities in government relations.
“John is a well-respected professional within in the water utility industry,” said Firlotte. “His enduring commitment to provide Aquarion’s customers with the highest quality drinking water and environmental leadership are complemented by his noteworthy contributions to the drinking water profession on both the state and national level.”
Herlihy began his career at Aquarion as a microbiologist in the company’s water quality laboratory. He has since become a distinguished leader within the Connecticut Section of the American Water Works Association, serving as past Board of Directors chairman and standing chair on the Water Utility Council. He has also been active in water industry leadership on the national level and was the recipient of the 2013 George Warren Fuller Award, the highest honor of the American Water Works Association.
In addition to his leadership in national legislative and regulatory affairs for the industry, Herlihy has been a driving force behind initiatives such as “Water Boot Camp.” Created by the CTAWWA, Water Boot Camp is designed to help students in the Bridgeport, Hartford and New Haven areas learn about job opportunities in the drinking water industry.
A graduate of Fairfield University, he and his wife, Suzanne, reside in Fairfield. He has coached soccer for the Special Olympics in Bridgeport for 30 years, and is a past-president of the Bridgeport Kiwanis Club. In 2012, he was inducted into Kiwanis International’s Legion of Honor.
