Rogue Comics and other local comic book stores will participate in Free Comic Book Day on May 4. The event takes place on the first weekend in May each year, usually timed with the first major comic book movie release of the year. In this case, the day coincides with the opening weekend for the Robert Downey, Jr.-starring "Iron Man" sequel.

“It’s a really great idea, and it not only helps bring new customers into my store, but new readers to comics themselves,” Rogue Comics owner Michael Fuller said in a press release.

The offer for a free book doesn’t apply to all comics. But each publisher has offered one or more titles—more than 50 in all—for customers to choose from. The options range from big names like "Superman," "Hulk" and "The Walking Dead," kids’ titles such as "Spongebob Squarepants" and "The Smurfs," as well as lesser-known books from independent publishers.

“This event allows fans to check out comics from publishers that they might not have ever picked up before,” Fuller said.

Rogue Comics is located at 3002 Fairfield Avenue, Bridgeport. Free Comic Book Day runs from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday, May 4.
