Bridgeport Mom Sells Tasty Treats And More At Southport Farmers Market

FAIRFIELD, Conn. — Lynne Interlandi says there’s one reason she often finds herself standing behind a table of fresh cheeses, salsa, pottery and woven goods at the Winter Farmers Market of Southport.

“I do this because I’m the best mother in the world,” she said with a smile.

And that’s because many of the fresh products she sells are created by her son, Sebastian, at Creative Shepherd Farm, his home in upstate New York.

A former teacher raised in Bridgeport, Sebastian Interlandi moved to tiny Ava, N.Y., a few years ago to live out his dream of raising sheep, tending vegetables and making the Basque-style cheeses, garlic herb spreads, soap and other goods he brings to his mother to sell.

It’s a labor of love: The farm is a full four hours from his mom’s home in the city’s Black Rock neighborhood. Sometimes it feels a world away, as the lifestyle is so different, Lynne Interlandi said.

Sebastian Interlandi, who also sells at his local markets, makes some cow’s milk products because he barters with his Amish neighbor, who milks a dozen cows by hand each morning and night.

The cow farmer uses a buggy to take the milk to Interlandi, who has built a storage facility for it. Three times a week, a larger distributor comes to pick up the organic milk for sale elsewhere.

“So they trade milk for space,” Lynne Interlandi said.

In addition to the food items, Interlandi also sells knit hats, woven shawls and decorative hummingbirds made in Ecuador and pottery she creates in a Fairfield Adult Education class.

“It’s kind of fun,” she said.

The Winter Farmers Market of Southport is located in the Ukrainian American Club at 279 King’s Drive in the Southport section of Fairfield. The market is open from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. each Saturday through April 30. Visit its Facebook page for more information.
