The rollover accident, which occurred just after 5 a.m. near Exit 5 on the westbound side, was still causing massive traffic jams after 9 a.m., according to Connecticut State Police and the state Department of Transportation.
The crash initially closed all lanes of I-84 west in Danbury, but they slowly reopened during the morning rush hour, DOT said. But traffic tie-ups never lessened, with delays reported for up to 10 miles back to Exit 10 in Newtown and on surface seats in Danbury, including on Main Street.
The traffic backups are expected to continue in the area until the crash scene is cleared, according to Connecticut State Police.
It was not clear how long that would take, but a large wrecker was on the scene after 9 a.m., working to "right" the truck, which was still on the shoulder. State police said it may take until "mid-morning."
No injuries were reported in the accident.
Motorists should expect delays in the area and seek an alternate route.
It was raining early Wednesday in the area, after periods of overnight snow, which could have caused slick road conditions in the area, DOT said.
