Shark Sighting Keeps Swimmers Out Of Water At Several NY Beaches A shark sighting kept swimmers out of the water at three New York beaches. The sighting was reported on Long Island at Nickerson Beach in Nassau County.  As a precaution, the town of Hempstead also closed Lido Beach and Malibu Beach for swimmers for a brief period early Saturday afternoon, Aug. 3.  Officials said the shark was spotted about 75 feet from the shore. Swimmer From New Fairfield Goes Missing At State Park In Ridgefield Police and dive teams are searching for a swimmer who was reported missing at a state park in Fairfield County. The effort to find the person began just before 5 p.m., Monday, Aug. 14, at Pierrepont State Park in Ridgefield, after the Ridgefield Police Department received a call reporting they could not find the person they were swimming with. Former Ridgefield High School standout Kieran Smith took third place in the 400-meter freestyle on Saturday, July 24. The 22-year-old Smith finished with a time of 3:43.94 to take the bronze medal.
