Gas Demand Hits Lowest Level in Nearly Two Years, Lowering Cost Prices at the pump continue to plummet for motorists, as the gasoline demand hits its lowest level in nearly two years, AAA announced. Nationally, the average motorist is paying $2.23 per gallon, down from $2.49 a year ago and down 19 cents from a month ago. The price drop comes despite a record number of travelers throughout the country during the holiday season. According to AAA, the average price per gallon has dropped each week for more than three months. Interstate 84 was backed up for several miles following a wrong-way, head-on crash with injuries in Putnam. The eastbound crash took place around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 on the Exit 19 (Route 312) ramp in Southeast, said the New York State Police. Eastbound traffic was backed up to at least Bullet Hole Road until the crash was cleared by around 10 a.m. No information was available regarding the seriousness of the injuries. Severe Thunderstorm Watch: Storms With Downpours, Gusty Winds, Lightning Moving Through Area With an increase in the chance for storms Friday afternoon and evening, a Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect for the area. The watch, issued at 3:40 p.m. by the National Weather Service, is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday. Among the counties covered by the watch are Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange and Fairfield. Isolated storms began to develop in the area in the mid-afternoon and are now moving eastward. (See radar image above.)
