Nationally, the average motorist is paying $2.23 per gallon, down from $2.49 a year ago and down 19 cents from a month ago. The price drop comes despite a record number of travelers throughout the country during the holiday season. Interstate 84 was backed up for several miles following a wrong-way, head-on crash with injuries in Putnam. The eastbound crash took place around 8:30 a.m. Wednesday, Jan. 2 on the Exit 19 (Route 312) ramp in Southeast, said the New York State Police. Eastbound traffic was backed up to at least Bullet Hole Road until the crash was cleared by around 10 a.m. No information was available regarding the seriousness of the injuries. The watch, issued at 3:40 p.m. by the National Weather Service, is in effect until 11 p.m. Friday. Among the counties covered by the watch are Westchester, Putnam, Dutchess, Rockland, Orange and Fairfield.
