A fundraiser for one of the four teenagers who crashed into a tree in New London County earlier this week said the 17-year-old showed moments of improvement on Wednesday, Oct. 16, but he has a "long, challenging road to recovery."
Kais Shiman, of Mystic, was one of the four teens in a 2012 Toyota 4Runner that veered off the wrong side of Fishtown Road in Groton around 1:20 a.m. on Monday, Oct. 14, and collided with a tree near the intersection of Little Gull Lane, authorities said.

Waldy Santiago, age 25, of Providence, Rhode Island, turned himself in at a State Police facility in Westbrook in Middlesex County on Wednesday, Oct. 25, in connection with the alleged scheme, according to Connecticut State Police.

Three Connecticut men have been charged with committing at least eight robberies of convenience and smoke shops across the state earlier this year.
The three were indicted by a grand jury on Thursday, June 16 in New Haven County, said Vanessa Roberts Avery, US Attorney for the District of Connecticut.

Man Admits Operating Scam That Defrauded CT Victim Of Nearly $1.2 Million
A 35-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a conspiracy charge stemming from a lottery scam that defrauded an elderly Connecticut victim of nearly $1.2 million.
Stieve Fernandez, age 35, of Argentine and Jamacia, made the plea on Wednesday, Feb. 3, in Bridgeport, said U.S. Attorney John H. Durham, U.S. Attorney for the District of Connecticut.
According to court documents and statements made in court, between approximately 2015 to 2018, Fernandez and others, including Minique Morris and Horace Crooks, defrauded an elderly Mystic resident in a lottery scam.
