Area Woman Plans 115-Mile Pilgrimage In Italy
A woman from Mahopac is embarking on a 115-mile spiritual journey throughout Italy to honor her father and raise funds and awareness for Alzheimer’s Disease. Karen Ganis is visiting Italy this June to make a 115-mile pilgrimage on foot from Palermo to Agricento. The trip is considered a spiritual journey for many people who make it. Ganis says the journey will be a chance to honor her father, who died from Alzheimer’s Disease 20 years ago. Area Real Estate Developer Sentenced For $58M Ponzi Scheme
A real estate developer will spend time behind bars for operating a years-long $58 million Ponzi scheme that included properties in the area. Michael D’Alessio, 53, was sentenced on Friday, April 5 to six years in prison for his elaborate scheme to defraud investors in luxury real estate developments in Manhattan, the Hamptons, Westchester and elsewhere. In addition to the prison term, D'Alessio was sentenced to three years of supervised release and order to pay forfeiture in the amount of $58,090,047. The Hudson Valley was among three areas targeted by federal officers from the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement’s Enforcement and Removal Operations, which led to the arrest of several sexual predators during a two-day operation this week. As part of “Operation SOAR” (Sexual Offender Alien Removal), ICE officers arrested 16 undocumented sex offenders, with arrests taking place in Rockland County, on Long Island and throughout New York City.
