Humpback Whale Carcass Found On Long Island
Authorities are working to determine the cause of death of a humpback whale that was found on Long Island. At about 4 p.m. Thursday, June 1, the carcass of the whale floated into Shinnecock Bay in Southampton. Southampton Town Police officers and staff from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) and Atlantic Marine Conservation Society then arrived on the scene. Massive Dead Whale Found On Long Island Shore
A massive whale was found washed up on a Long Island shore over the weekend. Members of the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society responded to Amagansett late on Saturday, May 30, where there was a report of a 35-foot female humpback whale on the beach. The whale was originally reported just offshore of Amagansett by the United States Coast Guard and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation Saturday night after it was seen in the surf at approximately 8 p.m., officials said. There's an outpouring of sadness over news that a dead 37-foot female humpback whale washed up on a beach in the Hamptons. The whale was found on Cupsogue Beach County Park in Westhampton Beach, the Atlantic Marine Conservation Society in Hampton Bays announced on Sunday, May 5. Know Before You Go: This Town In The Hamptons Just Banned The Release Of Balloons
A popular Long Island vacation destination is getting a little less festive with the passing of a rare balloon ban. The East Hampton Town Board announced that it has unanimously voted in favor of legislation that will ban the intentional release of balloons in the area. Town Supervisor Peter Van Scoyoc, who sponsored the legislation, said that the idea behind the new law was to cut down on litter and to protect wildlife that ingests popped balloons. “Balloons waste natural resources, litter our communities, pollute our waterways and kill wildlife,” the new law states.
