“I’m so thankful for everyone who has taken time to work with me and support me throughout my life,” said Okwuka. “So much of what I accomplished is due to our team, my coaches, especially Mr. MacNutt, and my parents.”
Okwuka joins McKenzie Corby from the class of 1998 and Kate MacNutt from the class of 2014 as the third female in Wooster’s history to reach the milestone. Like the two before her, Okwuka joined the varsity team in seventh grade. She is on track to eclipse Corby’s school record of 1,455 career points.
She is already a highly decorated basketball player having been named two-time MVP of the New England Tournament, two-time team MVP, and two-time New England and Hudson Valley Athletic League All-Star while guiding the team to two consecutive New England Championships, four consecutive league titles and an overall record of 77-6.
Okwuka has also set a record for the most number of double-doubles in a season and a career.
“This is a great day for Venus, the Okwuka family, our basketball program and the entire Wooster community. I am so proud of all that Venus has accomplished in her career,” said Coach Dave MacNutt. “She is a hard worker and deserves to reap the benefits of her efforts. Her contributions to this program, both on and off the court, have been stellar. Her love for the game and her teammates is infectious, making her a joy to coach on a daily basis. She has certainly earned this moment … and I’m just as excited for her future as her best days are still in front of her."
The Generals played a competitive game with Gunnery, but fell short by a score of 30-42.
