The essay was assigned to Caroline D'Angelo and her classmates by sixth-grade social studies teacher Lynne Classey. D'Angelo took the opportunity to continue King’s mission and wrote about the changes she believes would make the world better for everyone.
“Martin Luther King wasn’t afraid to share what he thought,” D'Angelo said. “People back then didn’t share about what they thought about black people being the same as white people, and he did. He made a difference and his speech changed laws. It showed that everyone should be respected.”
D'Angelo received a letter from Sen. Chris Murphy congratulating her.“I launched the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day Essay Challenge this year because it’s clear, perhaps now more than ever before, that our work is not yet complete,” Murphy said. “I hope this challenge encouraged young people all across Connecticut to commit to making Dr. King’s dream and the dreams of their own a reality."
