DANBURY, Conn. -- Danbury School Superintendent Sal Pascarella is warning parents to keep an eye out for the "Blue Whale Challenge," a potentially dangerous social media phenomenon that is making its way from Europe to the U.S.

The Blue Whale Challenge is an online game in which participants are purportedly assigned a curator who provides various acts of self-harm to be committed over the course of 50 days. The challenges range from cutting to sitting on the edge of a roof. The last challenge is purportedly to commit suicide.

Pascarella said the school district did not know of any students in Danbury who had taken part in the challenge to date and wanted to arm parents with the proper knowledge.

Parents should watch for risky behaviors by their children. Anyone who believes a student is involved in the Blue Whale Challenge should contact their child's school counselor.

The school district is checking computers for signs of the online challenge, Pascarella said.
