Danbury High School Grad Wins Red Sox Service Scholarship

DANBURY, Conn. -- Right before a recent game between the Boston Red Sox's and the Minnesota Twins at Fenway Park, Karal Kharawla, a 2016 graduate of Danbury High School, received one of 22 Connecticut Red Sox Service Scholarships

Kharawla, who describes herself as an outgoing kinda gal who loves to read, hang out with friends and watch "Greys Anatomy," will attend the University of Connecticut-Waterbury this fall to study biological sciences. She said she was shocked to receive the $1,000 scholarship.

"Even though I applied for the scholarship, I was still really surprised that I won because I was up against a great majority of others in my school and surrounding students in Connecticut," she said.

The fun part of the story is that Kharawla isn't really a sports fans: "I have never really been a fan of sports ... But I do enjoy new things and I truly enjoyed watching the Red Sox game live from the stadium. Watching a game like that carried so much energy and was a great experience."

As a sponsor of the program, the Ford Motor Company Fund's Tom O’Leary was on the field to help present Kharawla her award.

This is the scholarship program’s third year in Connecticut. It was first launched in New Hampshire in 2010 and now is in all five New England states outside of Massachusetts.The $1,000 Red Sox Service Scholarships are awarded to students based on academic performance, financial aid eligibility and demonstrated community service.
