Danbury Mayor Mark Boughton is leading his Republican rivals, according to a new poll.

The online poll comes three weeks before the Aug. 14 primary election. The GOP candidates square off in a debate at Sacred Heart University on Tuesday July 24, as reported here by Daily Voice.

Boughton, who won the Republican Party endorsement in May, was backed by 34.3 percent of those polled in an online survey.

Business executive Bob Stefanowski of Madison placed second at 20 percent, while former Greenwich hedge fund manager David Stemerman had 14.6 percent.

Stemerman edged out former Trumbull first selectman Tim Herbst at 14.5 percent, according to the survey.

Steve Obsitnik, a Westport technology entrepreneur finished last at 11.6 percent.

The poll was conducted by Tremont Public Advisors, LLC, a federal lobbying firm with offices in Hartford and Washington, D.C. Tremont is operated by longtime Hartford Democratic political adviser Matthew J. Hennessy.

Hennessy told the Hartford Courant that the bad news for Boughton is that his two closest opponents have the ability to pour millions of their own dollars into the race to close the gap in the closing weeks.

Hennessy is referring to Stemerman, who has contributed $12.8 million to the race, and Stefanowski, a business executive who has raised more than $2.2 million from fundraising and personal loans to his campaign
