The award presentation took place Nov. 3 at the council’s annual Healthcare Innovations Expo on Capitol Hill.

The event is dedicated to showcasing new developments in health care technologies, treatments and practices.

Included in this year’s expo were new technologies for blood glucose monitoring, innovative treatment options for mental illness, and telehealth systems that make physicians accessible to patients 24 hours a day.

Esty, a member of the U.S. House Science, Space and Technology Committee, emphasized the importance of such innovations.

“In order for America to lead in this globally-competitive world, we need to ensure that innovators in our healthcare system have the support they need to grow and compete,” she said. “I am honored to be recognized by the Healthcare Leadership Council, and I am proud of the work I have done in Congress to promote access to life-saving technologies, such as 3-D mammography, to encourage cutting-edge research at our world-class academic and research institutions and to ensure that we are prepared for a national pandemic."

Esty, who represents northwestern Connecticut in the House, vowed she "will continue to call on Congress to establish an innovation agenda that sets a thoughtful course to long-term growth and health for our country.”

Mary Grealy, the Healthcare Leadership Council's president, praised Esty for her work.

"As we strive to conquer illness, elevate population health and make our healthcare system more affordable and sustainable, the answer lies in dynamic and continual innovation,” Grealy said. “For this to happen, we need federal policies that encourage progress and new breakthroughs in care. We applaud Representative Elizabeth Esty for the leadership, vision and commitment that patients and healthcare consumers need.”
