DANBURY, Conn. -- U.S. Rep. Elizabeth Esty (D-5th District) and U.S. Sen. Richard Blumethanl (D-Conn.) welcomed "Team 26" to the Capitol in Washington, D.C., after the group's 400-mile bike ride from Newtown to help raise awareness for gun violence.

“Team 26, who rode almost 400 miles from Newtown to Washington, D.C., inspires me and inspires this country,” Esty said in a statement. “They are vivid examples of the extraordinary response to the horrific tragedy at Sandy Hook Elementary School — responding to indescribable horror not with despair or anger but with peace, hope, and love."

The "Team 26" name honors the memory of the 26 victims of the Sandy Hook shooting in December 2012.

U.S. Reps. Rosa DeLauro and Joe Courtney and U.S. Sen. Chris Murphy, all Connecticut Democrats, also greeted the riders.

The team also made stops in Greenwich and Ridgefield on its way to Capitol Hill.

“There have been meaningful changes in America since that terrible day over a year ago. States like our state of Connecticut, have answered the call," Esty said in a statement. "People across the country have come together to call for reforms to prevent gun violence and respect the 2nd Amendment rights of responsible gun owners."
